A sport that is followed with fervour by over a billion fans across the globe, soccer can also serve as a unifying mechanism and a tool for social change, a fact not lost on Canadian NBA star Steve Nash.

Nash, a starting point guard for the Phoenix Suns, is one of the NBA's most prominent stars and the only Canadian to win the league's MVP award (in 2005 and 2006). The native of Victoria is also a huge soccer fan, and is using his passion for the sport to help those in need around the world.

STUDENTS LIVE IN LIBRARY FOR LITERACY E-mail

VANCOUVER - Two undergraduate students are living in UBC’s library for the next 10 days as part of a national campaign to raise support, awareness and funds for global literacy.

As part of Live-in for Literacy 2009, UBC members of the Canadian university club DREAM (Discover the Reality of Educating All Minds) are pitching tents inside the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre (IKBLC). The other six participating libraries are at Queen’s University, University of Toronto, Concordia University, McMaster University, Laurentian University and Memorial University.
