Engaging Young Employees To Make A Difference

Today, more and more companies are offering employees rewards and bonuses for good work. These incentive programs not only serve to keep employees motivated and happy, they also help attract a younger demographic.

While these efforts and other merchandise discounts can help retain employees, organized programs that engage employees and create a sense of community in the workplace are really what make a job more than “just a job.” Efforts like after-hours social activities, pot-luck lunches and company volunteer days develop camaraderie and demonstrate an employer's investment in their employees' interests. These initiatives are especially important for part-time employees who, based on scheduling, aren't able to interact in the workplace regularly.

Employers are also exploring innovative ways to attract and connect with Generation Y employees. As teens become more attuned to new online spaces, employers are exploring these areas for additional ways to interact. For example, social networking site, Facebook, allows employees to communicate with their staff through company-specific groups and event invitations. Some companies are even going one step further to create their own online communities for employees.

McDonald's operates StationM, a forum for employees to share their thoughts, post photos and ask questions. “It's great to have an online space designed with our lifestyles in mind,” says Amanda Wilson, McDonald's crew member and StationM moderator. “Not only does the site let us know about upcoming opportunities with the company, it also helps develop a strong sense of community that we can bring into our restaurants.” Community-based sites like these help engage youth by providing communication and networking outlets.

It's important for companies to explore new channels for communicating with younger employees in meaningful ways that also help promote positive work environments. With a small amount of effort they will help ensure today's youth are tomorrow's greatest assets.
